porch
a picture of a collapsed porch for reference. I've decided to change the inn from the original plan to a mirror of the original plan with the porch collapsing in the north and the entrence to the basement in the south.

Ok i really need to redo my lighting now that there are more things in the scene. i also added the 'sky dome' but for some reason the picture is sideways... I'll have to try to fix that. I now have the inn and the barn in the shot even if they are only boxes at the moment. I've decided to move the basement entrance to the south side of the inn rather then having it on the north side. just a random desition but for some reason it didn't make sense to have it at the north end. I was thinking about extending the porch around the corner so I'd be on the north side as well as the west but now I'm looking at it and I'm not so sure. *shrug*

the layout
this is going to be the basic layout of my waystation.
1: the tracks will be at the north end of the area. the wooden slats will be uneven and sand will have built up between the rails.
2: various bushes will be scattered throughout the area. the majority will be at the north end, on the other side of the tracks.
3: the platform will stand just south of the tracks. originaly a wooden platform it has been worn away and is now so covered in sand and grit that it looks like little more then a 2-3 foot raise, a hill of sand.
4: the stable building will stand at the south west side of the compound. there will be two large barn doors on the east side that are only still standing because they have welded themselves to the side of the building (the doors will be done entirely in the color map.) on the south side a normal door will have collapsed and will be laying half in half out of the building. the inside of the building is too dark to see. the roof of this building may have collapsed.
5: the inn will be at the south-east side of the complex though it was originaly 2 stories it has now sagged as if inner supports have given way. it is now only slightly taller then the stable. other then that it has survived well.
6: there is a shed-like structure on the north side of the inn. it may have once been an entrance to a seller but now it has become sandblasted shut by the wind which blows from north-east to south-west. it is little more then a slightly triangular structure on the north side of the building.
7: the inn once had a porch, it has now collapsed completely blocking the south end of the front side of the building. the north side of the porch is only slumped not completely collapsed.
8: on the south side of the platform there is a bench. it is low and squat and has managed to stay standing because it is protected from the wind by the platform and the two short steps leading down from the platform.
9: there is a wooden fence that runs along the western side of the compound then turns and follows the south side (with a gap in the middle) on the east side the fence is mostly gone though there are signs that it once continued up the east side of the compound behind the inn. in plases in broke and was badly repaired, but all repairs were long ago.

OK i found the description in the Gunslinger so here it is.
it was a building. No two buildings, surrounded by a fallen rail fence. The wood seemed old, fragile to the point of elvishness; it was wood being transmogrified into sand. One of the buildings had a stable-- the shape was clear and unmistakable. the other was a house, or an inn. A way station for the coach line. the tottering sand-house (the wind had crusted the wood with grit until it looked like a sand castle that the sun had beat upon at low tide and hardened to a temporary abode) cast a thin line of shadow, and someone sat in the shadow, leaning against the building. And the building seemed to lean with the burden of his weight.
here it says it's a waystation for the coach line but i like the idea of a train stop so i'm going to change that. I do like the sound of the fence so i'll add that and take away some of the bushes i was planning on putting in.

since I already did a brief description of my city ant the only really interesting thing there is the mountain I think I'll move on to the next thing. My landscape.
I think I'm going to do a small waystation.
It will have 2 or 3 small buildings that are old and maybe partly falling down. They will be made of wood. Off to one side there will be a small platform. 2 steps will lead up to the platform and there will be an old worn (possibly collapsed) bench, (possibly on the platform possibly to one side.) there will be an old road sign off to one side of the platform. the sign will not be readable. Beside the platform will be a set of railroad tracks. Weeds have grown up between the tracks and they are in general disrepair. There may be other unreadable signs possibly a worn road (again overgrown). tumbleweeds and other brush have overgrown the place. It feels empty, dead, and slightly forbidding. Not a place you'd want to stay for to long.
It will not be totally wild west . There will also be otherworldly elements. Kind of "the gunslinger" esk with hints of post-apocalyptic goodness. these will be clear enough that the seen should look slightly wrong as well as otherworldly, but they shouldn't be overly apparent.

I made a city! at the end of day one it looks like this. a bunch of blocks with no real definition as buildings and off behind them the cool stuff. there's a mountain ( a small one ) an indent that would be a river if it was filled with water and a few trees. I could probably have done better with the trees. anyway, there it is.

oh right, this is the background for the newest page of my comic. No one appreciates backgrounds. 2 hours of work and no one will spend more then 5 seconds looking at it.
75 layers in photoshop and no one will pay any attention to it, besides to say it looks good.

Links.
This isn't the only place my work can be found. For almost a year now I have been the artist of a webcomic. This comic is called The Realm of My Roommates Closet. I invite you to take a look at it. You can find a link to it in the my links sidebar or go to http://realmofthecloset.smackjeeves.com.
